    Abstract

This research examines the al-Suq al-Luti Church as an architecturally significant testimony to the formation and development of Christian presence in the inland areas of Tripolitania, particularly in the sub-Saharan region. The church is located in Wadi Bazra, one of the tributaries of Wadi Maimun and Wadi Sawf al-Jin, approximately 20 km southeast of Bani Walid. The significance of this monument derives not only from its geographical location but also from its association with a historical context characterized by the uneven spread of Christianity between urban centers and inland areas. In this respect, the architectural evidence provided by the church constitutes an important source for reconstructing the pattern of Christian expansion beyond the traditional urban centers of the region.

The research adopts a historical and archaeological approach to interpret the church's position within the process of Christian expansion into the inland areas of Tripolitania, while taking into account the religious and social particularities that characterized these areas and the persistence of certain pagan beliefs and practices during periods of antiquity. Rather than merely establishing the chronological framework for the emergence of Christianity in the region, the research correlates historical evidence with architectural remains to develop a more comprehensive understanding of the nature and function of the Christian presence within the local environment.

At the architectural level, the research focuses on analyzing the plan, architectural elements, and artistic features of the al-Suq al-Luti Church, and on identifying its characteristics within the broader development of ecclesiastical architecture in Tripolitania. A comparative approach is employed by examining the church alongside a number of contemporary churches in the region, with the aim of identifying patterns of similarity and difference and distinguishing features that reflect shared regional architectural characteristics from those that may indicate local particularities in planning, construction, or function. This approach situates the church within the broader context of the history of Christian architecture in North Africa, rather than treating it as an isolated architectural unit detached from its regional setting.

The research also examines the transformations that affected the church building over time, with particular attention to its present condition and the deterioration affecting its architectural elements. In this context, it analyzes the effects of environmental and natural factors, together with successive human interventions and changes in use, in shaping the building's current condition. This aspect moves beyond mere documentation of the monument's present state toward an understanding of the processes of change it has undergone and the factors that have contributed to the loss or alteration of some of its material characteristics.

By integrating historical analysis, architectural interpretation, regional comparison, and assessment of the monument's present condition, this research provides a comprehensive examination of the al-Suq al-Luti Church. It seeks to establish its position within the Christian and urban landscape of Tripolitania and to highlight what this monument can reveal about the expansion of Christianity and the adaptation of ecclesiastical architecture to the inland environments of the region, while also drawing attention to the challenges facing the preservation and continued survival of this archaeological heritage and its material remains.
