    Abstract

This study examines the Karbala Incident in 61 AH/680 CE through a historical, analytical, and critical approach. It investigates the historical narratives of the event and analyzes its political, social, and intellectual causes and consequences. The study traces the circumstances preceding the Incident, particularly the accession of Yazid ibn Mu‘awiya, al-Husayn ibn Ali’s refusal to pledge allegiance, the letters sent by the people of Kufa, the mission of Muslim ibn Aqil, and the subsequent change in Kufa following the appointment of Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad.

The study also examines al-Husayn’s journey from Mecca toward Iraq, his encounter with al-Farazdaq, the reports he received concerning the death of Muslim ibn Aqil and the collapse of Kufan support, and his interception and eventual arrival at Karbala. It further analyzes the negotiations preceding the confrontation and the events of Ashura by comparing the accounts preserved in the early historical sources.

The findings demonstrate that the sources agree on the central elements of the event but differ concerning numbers, speeches, negotiations, and certain details of the battle. The reports of Abu Mikhnaf preserved by al-Tabari constitute essential historical material, yet they require comparison and critical examination. The study concludes that Karbala extended far beyond its immediate military outcome, contributing to the Tawwabun and Mukhtar movements, the development of pro-Alid tendencies, and the emergence of Karbala as an enduring symbol of sacrifice, justice, and resistance to oppression in Islamic memory.
